Another day, another RPP release. Not to sound ho-hum. We’re catching up and breaking down the avalanche of 2024. Constructing the rearview in the present, out of a sense of obligation, moreso to myself than anyone, really.
The Reds, Pinks & Purples - Unwishing Well (Slumberland Records)
The past few years have been marked with a clearinghouse of RPP releases, some physical, some digital only. And I’m a mark. Glenn Donaldson’s got me under his thumb, and until there’s a sign of drop off in quality, that’s where I’ll gladly reside. Released weeks before This is Adult Art School (which I gushed about in the new Shining Life Press single page zine comp), features two future RPP classics in “Learning to Love a Band” and “Your Worst Song is Your Greatest Hit.” They both feel like a leisurely rainy day stroll. Real “b/w” pieces for sure, ‘cept no one likes 7”s anymore. “Faith in Daydreaming Youth” drops the drums and steps up the atmospherics. It’s a tough call on who’s the King of Indie Pop, but surely Donaldson’s made his case for the current Prince of Indie Pop. Give it time and maybe he’ll be anointed.
