Midweek return. Keeping it rolling. If it’s gotta be one by one, you’re gonna hear about all the things that are nipping at my heels. Another one (of many) that came on my radar via Dynamite Hemorrhage Radio/Radio Dies Screaming. I figure it’s been a good six months since I’ve patted Jay Hinman on the back, it’s high time I give him a holler.
S.M.E.F. - Some Colored Backs Of Great Contempt (Urticaria Records)
Have ya ever been kicking back with a mix tape blaring and suddenly the sound starts wobbling and the next thing you know you’re getting a woozy version of the sounds you’ve come to love? You know that tape’s permanently fucked. So what do you do? Chuck it? Or, do you hang onto it and adjust yer ears to the new sound? With S.M.E.F. you have to make that choice right out of the gate. It’s like they recorded a moderately weird UK DIY influenced demo and then laid the tape in the sun during peak Summer heat. It’s a real oddball of a listen without coming off like some sorta novelty. For the true weirdo punks and the Egg Punks that’ve dug deeper than constantly copping Devo moves.
