Back for a new week of One-A-Day Reviews. First week was a cinch, but second week’s already days behind. But we’ll live. Catching up is a lifelong endeavor.
Nourished By Time - Catching Chickens EP (XL Recordings)
The previous Nourished By Time album, Erotic Probiotic 2, was a batch of home spun R&B, like if Lou Barlow made an album with D’Angelo. Fit nicely next to Steve Lacy’s Gemini Rights. Such an oddball, but perfect for my niche needs. Catching Chickens is the formalized big boy label debut. Somehow the EP is more expansive than the preceding album. Opener “Hell of a Ride” feels like a continuation in vibe, but with tightened up songwriting. “Hand On Me” dips into synth pop, followed by shoegaze inflected R&B on “Poison-Soaked.” The last two tracks get a little heavier into the late-80’s/early-90’s R&B smoothness but never limit themselves to a straight up nostalgia grab. This is the kind of stuff that’s super not my thing unless it’s absolutely perfect, and so far, Nourished By Time has dialed it in.
